JUMP? 4 TIPS FOR A PERFECT JUMP
Diving is a complex action, and is a progression technique that is used very often in canyons.
While it is true that diving is never compulsory, it is also true that it is an extremely playful part, which speeds up the canyon.
DIVING IS FUN! YES but we have to do it the right way, because dives are the biggest cause of injuries in canyons…. and so let’s look at the 4 key points for a perfect dive
1- THE STARTING POSITION.
In canyoning, unlike springboard diving, you do not start with your feet together. The correct position is to walk, one foot forward and one back. The front foot will be the one used for pushing and the back foot will be the first to go towards the receiving pool.
Which leg to put forward is very often a personal choice, sometimes forced by the conformation of the take-off point.
2 – THE SLAUGHTER
is a crucial moment, the pushing foot must ‘copy’ the terrain well, following the forward movement of the body. No hesitation, this could change the canyoneer’s balance and make him fall badly into the water or worse onto the rocks. There are dives that require a lot of thrust, for an entry into the pool away from the take-off point, and dives that must be made almost vertical to the momentum point.
3 – IN FLIGHT
once ‘airborne’, we can safely assume the most varied positions, and give free rein to our imagination, but beware of point 4
4- THE ENTRANCE TO THE PUDDLE
Entering the pool is the final stage of our dive and certainly the one that determines whether we have performed everything correctly.
Before impacting the water, we must assume a ‘brush’ position, that is:
– legs together
– arms inside the body line
– contracted abdominals
– toes pointing downwards.
– and remember not to look at the water, entering the water with open eyes could hurt
